The Pantanal lies in the western part of central Brazil and encompasses about 140.000 square kilometers of savannas, forests, rivers and lagoons. It is considered the largest freshwater marsh in the world. During the rainy season from October through March this area floods and plant life explodes. Then in April as the waters recede, the birds return in vast numbers and variety. Due to the wide open areas between patches of forest, birds are easily seen. It is estimated that during the year about 650 species of birds call the Pantanal their home!

On Fazenda Barranco Alto you will have the rare opportunity to witness the morning fishing of a giant otter family as dawn breaks, observe the ritual of alligator mating and, with luck and patience, to look into the eyes of the biggest cat of the Americas: the jaguar (1 on 3 guests that visited the lodge in the last 3 month, saw a Jaguar) or a Jaguatirica ( 1 on 5 guests ).
Besides this, you can live the day-to-day life of an authentic Pantanal cowboy, savour typical local dishes and sleep in a traditional house which offers all the necessary comforts for a cozy and unforgettable stay.
In the early morning and evening visitors can enjoy the magnificent spectacle of thousands of birds flying. In the Pantanal there are many types of parrots, egrets, jays, cormorants, raptors, seriemas, plovers, sandpipers, skimmers, terns, doves, cuckoos, owls, nightjars, potoos, hummingbirds, trogons, ovenbirds, tanagers, cardinals, finches, blackbirds, orioles, spoonbills, woodpeckers, tyrants, eagles, ibis, macaws, ducks, hawks, and toucans.
The Jabiru (Jabiru mycteria) is commonly seen here and has come to be a symbol of the Pantanal.
Macaws abound within this area. This is one of the last places where the largest hook bill, the endangered Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) can be seen daily.

Day 1. Campo Grande - Pantanal
Arrival at the airport of Campo Grande, where assistance, with name board, is waiting for you. You will board a small air plane, Cessna 206 // 210 or a Piper Arrow for an unforgettable flight over the wetlands of the Pantanal to Fazenda Barranco Alto. A flight of approximately 50 minutes. The flight will give you a wonderful idea of the Pantanal habitat, its forested islands of trees, lagoons, lakes and channels, and the scattered farmsteads built on the highest ground to avoid the annual flooding. Often one can spot tapir, capybara, flocks of birds and other animals while you fly at about 600 ft above the flat Pantanal. Arrival at Fazenda Barranco Alto. Followed by the check-in. The programs and activities that are offer by the fazenda are guided by Portuguese, English, German, French and Spanish guides. The program will be adapted to suit the particular desires of each guest. Some of the possible actvities are; photosafari, exploring the meanders of the rio Negro by silent boats and kayaks, day and night walks on horses, boats and by foot, animal spotting by night with searchlights, river exploration and swimming.

The trips mentioned above are scheduled at the pousada. The trips will be carefully selected, depending the climate and time of the year and will be guided by local guides that know all about the flora and fauna that make this place unique. To avoid the intense heath during the day, the tours are taking place early in the morning and mid-afternoon, at these times of the day, the possibilities of seeing the movement of the animals are a lot bigger.
